Lesson 4: Move, Recover, and Celebrate

Thursday, November 5, 2026

Objective: Students will alternate easy activity and recovery and describe how the heart, lungs, and muscles work together.
1Stretching & Mobility5 min›

Easy March and Reach

30 seconds
  1. Stand or sit tall with room around you.
  2. March gently and reach one arm forward at a time.
  3. Keep shoulders relaxed and breathe normally.

Muscles/joints: Hip flexors, shoulders, ankles

Coaching cue: Smooth steps, easy breathing.

Modification: Seated marching or arm reaches only.

Controlled Heel Raises

10 repetitions
  1. Stand near a wall for support.
  2. Lift heels slowly, keeping toes on the ground.
  3. Lower with control; avoid bouncing.

Muscles/joints: Calves and ankle joints

Coaching cue: Up slowly, down softly.

Modification: Seated heel raises or supported standing.

Side Steps and Shoulder Rolls

6 steps each direction, 8 shoulder rolls
  1. Take small side steps without crossing feet.
  2. Pause and roll shoulders gently backward.
  3. Repeat in the other direction.

Muscles/joints: Glutes, hip joints, trapezius

Coaching cue: Eyes ahead; leave space.

Modification: Seated side reaches and shoulder rolls.

2WARM-UP RUN / JOG — 2–3 MINUTESRequired›
2:00

Mark a safe route

  • Mark a loop with 4–6 cones around the field or blacktop (about 100–150 yards).
  • Keep the route away from fences, poles, parked cars, and uneven ground.
  • Stand where you can see the entire loop.

Starting & stopping

  • Gather students at the start cone. Say: 'When I blow the whistle, jog at a talking pace.'
  • One whistle = start; two whistles = slow to a walk and come back to the start cone.
  • Use the countdown timer below so everyone finishes together.

Pacing

Students should jog at a 'talking pace' — they could still chat with a friend. This is not a race and never a punishment.

Safety

  • Pass on the outside, call 'On your left.'
  • Shoes tied before starting.
  • Walk if you feel dizzy, have chest pain, or can't catch your breath — tell the teacher.

Alternatives

Students may brisk-walk, power-march, or do seated arm-pumping. Wheelchair users can roll the loop or do arm circuits.

Hydration

Water break immediately after the run. Remind students to drink before and after PE.

3Review & Mini-Lesson10 min›

Review questions

  • What is endurance?
  • Why are breaks a smart choice?

Vocabulary

Recovery
Giving your body time to feel comfortable again after activity.
Active rest
Easy movement such as slow walking between activities.
Hydration
Drinking enough water for your body’s needs.

What the Teacher Should Say

Today we will move, slow down, and notice our bodies. Your heart pumps blood, your lungs help bring in oxygen, and your muscles help you move. During active rest, we walk slowly or relax our arm movements. You can stop and rest instead. Water is always available. We celebrate learning and listening to our bodies, not beating anyone. At the end you will tell me one body change and one way you took care of yourself.

Step-by-step demonstration

  1. Model 20 seconds of easy marching followed by 40 seconds of slow walking.
  2. Use a comfortable talk check during recovery.
  3. Point to heart, lungs, and a leg muscle and explain their roles.
  4. Show safely moving out of a lane for water.

Real-world examples

  • Walking between turns in a game can be active rest.
  • Drinking water after PE supports healthy activity habits.

Questions to ask students

  • What happens during recovery?
  • How do the heart and lungs help your muscles?
  • What is one safe choice you made today?

Extension

Make a picture sequence: move, slow down, drink water, reflect.

4Group Activity: Heart-Team Celebration Circuit15–20 min›

Purpose: Review cardiovascular concepts through gentle activity and recovery.

Equipment

  • 4 cones
  • Timer
  • Heart/lungs/muscles picture cards

Players

Whole class in small groups of 3–4

Space & setup

Four accessible stations: marching, imaginary jump rope without jumping, side steps, and walking; mark a rest bay.

Rules

  • 20 seconds of easy activity, then 40 seconds of slow movement or rest.
  • Everyone chooses a comfortable option.
  • At each station, answer or point to one review clue.

Step-by-step

  1. Review body-team roles and the recovery signal.
  2. Do a 20-second comfortable activity at station 1.
  3. Recover for 40 seconds and notice breathing.
  4. Answer a picture clue: heart pumps, lungs bring air, or muscles move.
  5. Rotate through four stations; take water, then repeat if comfortable.
  6. Give each student a brief independent body-team question.

Teacher demonstration

Show the activity/rest pattern and a full-sentence talk check.

Safety

  • Keep at least an arm’s length between students and use marked travel lanes.
  • Use controlled effort, not an all-out race; water and rest are available.
  • Stop and tell the teacher about pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual breathing difficulty. Follow individual health plans.

Modifications

Use shorter activity, longer rest, seated movements, rolling, or picture-pointing answers.

Advanced challenge

Lead a recovery reminder and explain why pace matters.

Assessment

Check each student identifies two body-team roles and describes a recovery choice; compare learning, not fitness scores.

5Supervised Free Play & Cooldown20–30 min›

Activity choices

Football: soft-ball passing or non-contact flag games — no tacklingBasketball: dribbling, partner passing, or low-hoop shootingSoccer: passing, dribbling, or small-sided play — no heading or slide tacklesKickball: soft-ball kick and run — no throwing at runnersHula hoopsJump ropesFour-squareSoft-ball catchHopscotchWalking follow-the-leader

Expectations

  • Stay inside the coned boundary.
  • Take turns and share equipment.
  • Include anyone who wants to join.
  • Teacher circulates and keeps eyes on all groups.
  • Water available throughout.

Cooldown

  • Walk or roll slowly for 2 minutes until breathing is comfortable.
  • Supported calf stretch: 15–20 seconds each side, without bouncing.
  • Gentle cross-body shoulder stretch: 15 seconds each arm.
  • Take three relaxed breaths; drink water.
Reflection question: What did you learn about your body’s team this unit?
